India's Vision for Green Hydrogen: A Step Towards Global Leadership
Key Ideas
  • India aims to lead in green hydrogen production by leveraging its robust renewable energy base and launching initiatives like the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
  • The Mission targets 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen production by 2030, aiming to mitigate 50 MMT of CO2 emissions annually and attract significant investments.
  • Despite challenges like high production costs and infrastructure limitations, India is proactive in creating a supportive ecosystem with policies and incentives.
  • India envisions not only meeting domestic demand but also becoming a major global exporter of green hydrogen by 2030, contributing significantly to global decarbonization.
At the World Hydrogen Summit 2025 in Rotterdam, Shri Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary of India's Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, outlined India's ambitious vision to lead in green hydrogen production. India, with over 223 GW of renewable energy capacity, aims to achieve energy independence by 2047 and Net Zero emissions by 2070. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, with an initial allocation of USD 2.4 billion, targets 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen production by 2030, attracting investments of approximately USD 100 billion and creating over 600,000 jobs. Despite challenges, such as high production costs, India has launched initiatives like the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme and is adopting policy provisions to support the nascent industry. The goal is not only to meet domestic demand but also to become a major global exporter of green hydrogen by 2030, contributing significantly to global decarbonization efforts.
