Innovative Oxygen Trials in Wastewater Treatment Deliver Efficiency Gains and Energy Savings
Key Ideas
  • Lagan MEICA's publication highlights a 15% reduction in aeration time, 31% increase in ammonia removal, and 13% energy consumption reduction at NI Water's site in Belfast.
  • Efficiency gains lead to increased capacity, reduced sludge transportation, and disposal costs, benefiting Northern Ireland Water's operations.
  • CPH2's MFE technology generates green hydrogen and oxygen, providing commercial and environmental benefits by producing fuel cell-grade hydrogen for sale and reducing carbon emissions.
  • The successful implementation of oxygen-enriched aeration in wastewater treatment processes demonstrates the scalability and global replicability of CPH2's technology.
Clean Power Hydrogen plc, in collaboration with Lagan MEICA, has announced a breakthrough in wastewater treatment efficiency at Northern Ireland Water's Duncrue Street site in Belfast. By incorporating high-purity oxygen produced from an MFE electrolyser into the treatment process, significant gains have been achieved. These gains include a 15% decrease in aeration time, a 31% improvement in ammonia removal, and a 13% reduction in energy consumption, leading to enhanced capacity and cost savings for NI Water. The use of oxygen-enriched air has also resulted in reduced sludge transportation and disposal expenses. Additionally, the project has enabled the production of fuel cell-grade hydrogen, further bolstering the commercial viability of the technology. This groundbreaking initiative marks the first large-scale production of hydrogen and oxygen in Northern Ireland, offering a promising solution for reducing carbon emissions in various industries and transportation sectors. The success of this project showcases the potential for widespread adoption of CPH2's technology in wastewater treatment plants globally.
