Sitav, an Italian firm, has unveiled the HB1-001 FENHYCE locomotive at their maintenance facility in Piacenza. This locomotive, a modernized version of the class D.145 shunting locomotive originally manufactured by Fiat Savigliano, now runs on hydrogen fuel cells developed in partnership with the University of Genoa. The hydrogen system is supported by auxiliary batteries, providing a variable power output between 450 kW and 900 kW. The 72-tonne locomotive is designed to haul trains weighing up to 2,200 t on gradients of up to 4‰. The HB1-001 FENHYCE features remote diagnostics and energy recuperation systems, with braking and anti-slip systems from Czech supplier DAKO-CZ. Certification for the hydrogen-powered locomotive is anticipated by December, followed by operational trials in collaboration with potential customers in the coming year. This innovative project showcases a significant step towards sustainable and technologically advanced solutions in the railway industry.
