Greece's Green Hydrogen Initiative in Western Macedonia
Key Ideas
- Greek Alternate Minister launches pilot project for high-efficiency CHP unit using green hydrogen in Western Macedonia.
- Initiative aims to showcase cutting-edge energy technologies and contribute to the region's energy transition and decarbonization efforts.
- Public Power Corp. (PPC) investing EUR 5.8 billion to support transition of Western Macedonia with new energy technologies and solar capacity.
The Greek government, under the direction of Alternate Minister of Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanasis, has initiated a pilot project in Western Macedonia focused on green hydrogen. The aim is to install and operate a high-efficiency combined heat and power (CHP) unit using fuel cells powered by green hydrogen. This project is part of the Just Development Transition Programme 2021–2027 and is geared towards transforming the region's economy towards clean and smart technologies. The green hydrogen produced for this project will be generated in electrolyzers powered by renewable electricity. The project has a budget of EUR 7.87 million and will provide power and heat to important facilities like the Bodosakeio General Hospital of Ptolemaida and the Chemical Process & Energy Resources Institute (CPERI). The initiative aligns with the country's decarbonization efforts, with plans to transition the last coal plant, Ptolemaida 5, to a gas power plant by the end of 2026. Public Power Corp. (PPC) is also investing significantly in new energy technologies and solar capacity in Western Macedonia, showing a positive commitment to sustainable energy practices.
