Innovative Solutions for Water Scarcity, Clean Hydrogen, and Brine Reuse
Key Ideas
  • NuScale's research focuses on providing clean water and efficient hydrogen production through integrated energy systems.
  • Their technology can desalinate water and produce surplus power for residential and industrial use.
  • The company developed a novel approach using brine from desalination to produce clean hydrogen, addressing environmental challenges.
  • NuScale's innovation has the potential to tackle water scarcity, brine remediation, and hydrogen production, providing carbon-free energy solutions.
NuScale Power Corporation in Corvallis, Oregon, has announced research programs targeting an integrated energy system to address water scarcity, clean hydrogen production, and industrial brine reuse. By coupling their small modular reactor technology with a reverse osmosis desalination system, they can produce 150 million gallons of clean water per day without emitting carbon dioxide. The surplus power generated can provide electricity for 400,000 homes. NuScale's new approach uses brine from desalination to produce hydrogen, partnering with the U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. This hydro-thermal chemical decomposition approach is energy and cost-efficient, with zero carbon emissions if powered by NuScale's energy systems. Their breakthrough was presented at the World Petrochemical Conference showcasing progress in desalination and clean hydrogen production. The company's Integrated Energy System simulator in Corvallis allows for optimal configurations for large-scale industrial hydrogen production. NuScale's mission is to provide safe, scalable, and reliable carbon-free energy solutions for various applications worldwide, including desalination, hydrogen production, and data centers.
