Italgas, in partnership with Edison Energia and Granarolo, is launching a groundbreaking project in Sardinia to supply a dairy plant with a natural gas blend enriched with up to 20% green hydrogen. This marks Italy's first large-scale application of hydrogen-blended fuel, scheduled to start in September 2025. The project involves a digital network operated by Medea, a subsidiary of Italgas, connecting the Casearia Podda plant in Sestu. A Power to Gas facility will produce hydrogen from solar energy, while modern smart meters will ensure safe hydrogen-methane mixtures. Granarolo will upgrade its thermal systems with hydrogen-capable generators, enhancing efficiency and safety through an energy performance contract. Gaxa, a subsidiary of Edison Energia, will manage the hydrogen blend's supply to the facility. The initiative not only enhances the region's infrastructure but also showcases a strategic move towards innovative energy solutions and emission reduction.
