Novalja Leading the Way: Green Hydrogen Production Project in Croatia
Key Ideas
  • Novalja in Croatia is pioneering the production of green hydrogen, aiming for energy independence and sustainability by 2030.
  • The Zero Emission Corridor (ZEC) H2 project in Novalja involves innovative technology utilizing renewable energy sources like sea waves for hydrogen production.
  • The pilot plant in Žigljen port, funded by the EU, is a significant step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing energy efficiency, and promoting the use of renewables.
  • The project reaffirms Novalja's dedication to sustainable development, environmental protection, and advancement in the green energy sector.
Novalja, a town in Croatia, is on the path to becoming a shining example of green hydrogen production in the region. The local authority in Novalja has embarked on the ambitious Zero Emission Corridor (ZEC) H2 project, which aims to establish the production and distribution of green hydrogen using only renewable energy sources. This initiative marks a crucial milestone in Novalja's journey towards sustainable development and energy independence. The construction of a pilot facility in the Žigljen port has already commenced, with plans to utilize innovative domestic technology to generate electricity from sea waves for water electrolysis and green hydrogen production. By 2027, this facility is expected to be fully operational, setting the stage for Novalja to achieve energy independence and become an emission-free town by 2030. The project, financed through the EU's Interregional Innovation Investments Instrument, will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also power various public amenities with green hydrogen and excess energy. With 32 green hydrogen projects already in Croatia, including unique initiatives like producing hydrogen from sewage sludge, Novalja's commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection is further solidified through the ZEC H2 project.
