Oman's Duqm SEZAD Welcomes Project Cargo for Landmark Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Venture
Key Ideas
- Project cargo has started arriving at Duqm SEZAD for Oman's first green hydrogen and ammonia venture, marking a significant milestone for the country's gigawatt-scale green energy industry.
- The green ammonia plant, developed by Green Hydrogen and Chemicals Company SAOC, will have an initial capacity of 100,000 tonnes per annum, with plans for future expansion to 1.1 million tpa.
- Key components like solar PV modules, trackers, and electrolysis systems are being delivered to support the project, with companies like GameChange Solar and Sungrow Hydrogen involved in the supply chain.
- The successful execution of the Duqm green ammonia project is crucial for Oman's broader hydrogen strategy, with a long-term offtake agreement already in place with Norwegian company Yara for the full annual output of green ammonia.
Project cargo has started arriving at the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) in Oman for the country's inaugural green hydrogen and ammonia project. The venture, led by Green Hydrogen and Chemicals Company SAOC, a subsidiary of the ACME Group, aims to establish a green ammonia plant with an initial capacity of 100,000 tonnes per annum, expandable to 1.1 million tpa. The project, estimated at $750 million, is set to be commissioned in Q1 2027.
The first consignment of project cargo, including oversized equipment, has been successfully transported to the plant site from the Port of Duqm. Additional deliveries, such as solar PV modules, trackers, and electrolysis systems, are in the pipeline to support the project's supply chain. Companies like GameChange Solar and Sungrow Hydrogen are playing key roles in providing necessary components.
The Duqm green ammonia initiative is part of a larger plan involving nine green hydrogen projects across Oman's Al Wusta and Dhofar governorates, with a total investment exceeding $40 billion. The timely completion of the Duqm plant is essential for Oman's hydrogen strategy, with a significant agreement already in place with Yara for offloading the full annual output of green ammonia.
Various companies, including Sungrow Hydrogen and Shuangliang Hydrogen from China, are actively engaged in supplying equipment for hydrogen production. Moreover, DarkOcean Geostar, based in the UAE, has completed an offshore investigation to support marine infrastructure development for the ammonia plant.
The successful realization of the Duqm green ammonia project is poised to drive Oman's ambitions in the green energy sector and position the country as a key player in the global hydrogen economy.
