Green Innovation at Gothenburg Port: Hydrogen-Powered Generator for Ships
Key Ideas
  • A pilot test at the Port of Gothenburg used a hydrogen generator to supply electricity to ships docked at the port.
  • The generator, running on 100% green hydrogen, connected to the shore power facility, benefiting vessels like Stena Germanica and Stena Scandinavica.
  • The test aimed to showcase how mobile hydrogen solutions can assist ports in reducing emissions, aligning with upcoming EU regulations on onshore power supply by 2030.
  • Hydrogen has been actively used at the port, including in fueling stations for trucks and to power heavy machinery in terminal expansion projects.
A recent pilot test at the Port of Gothenburg in Sweden involved the use of a hydrogen generator to provide electricity to ships at the port. Over a two-week trial period, a generator fueled by 100% green hydrogen was connected to Stena Line’s shore power facility, supplying electricity to ships like Stena Germanica and Stena Scandinavica while they were docked. The hydrogen generator was developed by Hitachi Energy with power modules supplied by PowerCell Group, and the hydrogen was sourced from Linde Gas. The aim of the test was to demonstrate how mobile hydrogen solutions could assist ports in reducing emissions, particularly in anticipation of new EU regulations mandating onshore power supply by 2030. The Port of Gothenburg has embraced hydrogen technology in various applications, including a hydrogen refueling station for trucks and testing hydrogen-powered work vehicles. Additionally, the technology used in the recent OPS trial was also utilized by Skanska to power heavy machinery in a terminal expansion project. Viktor Allgurén, Head of Innovation at the Port of Gothenburg, highlighted the importance of addressing climate concerns collectively and expressed optimism about the potential of hydrogen solutions for ports. Anders Peterson from Stena Line emphasized the industry's commitment to exploring new emission-reducing technologies. The collaboration between these entities underscores the industry's efforts to innovate and transition towards more sustainable practices.
