NEOM Green Hydrogen Project Nears Completion in Saudi Arabia
Key Ideas
  • NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia is at 80% completion, including green hydrogen facility, wind and solar power generation sites, and transmission grid.
  • The project, a joint venture of ACWA Power, Air Products, and NEOM, will produce 600 tonnes per day of carbon-free hydrogen in the form of green ammonia.
  • The plant will save around five million metric tonnes per year of carbon emissions, using proven technologies and aiming to align with Saudi Vision 2030 and Saudi Green Initiative.
  • The construction is on track for completion by mid-2026, with the first ammonia product expected in 2027, operating on 4 GW of renewable electricity from on-site wind and solar plants.
The NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia, led by NEOM Green Hydrogen Company, has achieved an impressive 80% completion milestone across all its sites. The project, a major joint venture involving ACWA Power, Air Products, and NEOM, is set to become the world's largest green hydrogen-based ammonia production facility. It is designed to produce a substantial 600 tonnes per day of carbon-free hydrogen in the form of green ammonia for global transportation and industrial use. The construction progress includes essential components like wind turbines, hydrogen storage vessels, electrolyzers, and other crucial infrastructure. The project is focused on integrating proven technologies at a large scale, with an innovative approach to using ammonia for global hydrogen transportation. One of the key objectives of this initiative is to significantly reduce carbon emissions, aiming to save the world approximately five million metric tonnes of CO2 annually. Spanning over a vast area of 300 square kilometers in the NEOM region of Saudi Arabia, the project is in line with the country's ambitious Saudi Vision 2030 and Saudi Green Initiative. With a completion target of mid-2026, the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project is on track to deliver its first ammonia product by 2027. The facility will operate entirely on 4 GW of renewable electricity generated from dedicated on-site wind and solar plants, showcasing a commitment to sustainable energy practices and environmental responsibility.
