Singapore-based Proteus Energy has revealed its latest innovation in the form of a scalable hydrogen fuel cell system tailored for marine vessels. The Proteus Maritime Fuel Cell Solution boasts 75 kW modular fuel cell stacks that can be combined to meet higher power requirements, presenting a viable option for harbour crafts, offshore support vessels, and various other waterway vessels. Developed in partnership with Symbio France, a major hydrogen fuel cell provider co-owned by Michelin, Stellantis, and Forvia, the technology is an adaptation of proven systems used in European road transport. Notable features of this solution include zero tailpipe emissions, low maintenance needs, fast refuelling capabilities, and minimal noise and vibration levels, making it ideal for compact marine environments and hybrid vessel setups. The fuel cell stacks are manufactured at Symbio's gigafactory in Lyon, guaranteeing high-volume production with automotive-grade quality standards. Additionally, Proteus will offer DNV type-approved high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks for efficient onboard storage. The fuel cell system is anticipated to receive type approval by the conclusion of 2025, with deliveries scheduled to kick off in 2026, ushering in a new era of clean energy adoption in the maritime sector.
