This move aligns with Denmark's goal to power its national gas grid entirely with biogas by 2030, emphasizing the importance of utilizing organic waste for sustainable energy solutions. The joint venture plans to leverage Sumitomo Corporation's European business network to scale up the biogas business and develop e-SAF, a sustainable aviation fuel, using biomass-derived carbon dioxide and green hydrogen. This initiative capitalizes on Denmark's renewable energy advantage, with 90% of domestic electricity sourced from renewables. The Sumitomo Corporation Group's bioenergy strategy includes partnerships in Japan and Malaysia to drive bioenergy projects. In Japan, the MORISORA Project focuses on developing SAF domestically, while agreements with reNIKOLA in Malaysia aim to explore biomethane production and sales in Malaysia and Indonesia. By investing in bioenergy, Sumitomo Corporation aims to achieve carbon neutrality in its operations by 2050, contributing to a sustainable energy cycle. The establishment of North Sky A/S marks Sumitomo Corporation's entry into the biogas production business, positioning bioenergy as a key growth area in its Medium-Term Management Plan.
