The European Commission has made a significant stride towards energy independence and decarbonization by awarding close to €1 billion in public funding to 15 innovative renewable hydrogen production projects. These projects, spanning five European countries, are expected to generate 2.2 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen over the next decade, leading to a reduction of over 15 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. The funding, facilitated through the second European Hydrogen Bank auction, aims to address the price disparity between production costs and market prices of renewable hydrogen. By supporting the EU's target of producing 10 million tonnes of domestic renewable hydrogen by 2030, these investments are crucial in decreasing Europe's reliance on fossil fuels, enhancing energy security, and promoting the growth of green jobs. The selected projects will receive fixed premium support, with specific financial assistance allocated for hydrogen producers in the maritime sector to accommodate their higher production expenses. The European Commission's forward-looking plans include a third European Hydrogen Bank auction with a substantial budget by the end of 2025, demonstrating a continued commitment to advancing renewable hydrogen production.
