Green Hydrogen Production Unit Approved in Northern Greece
Key Ideas
  • The Environment and Energy Ministry has approved the development of a 100 MW electrolytic hydrogen production unit in northern Greece.
  • Hellenic Hydrogen, a joint venture between Motor Oil and PPC, will spearhead the project to produce 15,500 tons of green hydrogen annually.
  • The unit will use water electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources and the output will be injected into the natural gas network for distribution.
  • The green hydrogen produced will be blended with natural gas and supplied to industrial users, including gas-fired power plants.
The Environment and Energy Ministry in Greece has granted approval for the development and operation of a 100 MW electrolytic hydrogen production unit at the former Amyntaio–Filotas power plant in northern Greece. The project, led by Hellenic Hydrogen—a collaboration between Motor Oil and the public power utility PPC—is set to generate around 15,500 tons of green hydrogen annually. The production of hydrogen will be carried out through water electrolysis, utilizing renewable energy sources exclusively. The hydrogen output, estimated at 15.5 million kilograms per year, will be integrated into the natural gas network managed by gas grid operator DESFA. This blend of green hydrogen and natural gas will then be supplied to various industrial consumers, including gas-fired power plants, contributing to a more sustainable energy ecosystem.
