Hy2gen Achieves RFNBO Certification for E-Methane Production in Germany
Key Ideas
  • Hy2gen's ATLANTIS facility in Werlte, Germany, becomes the first site in the country to produce RFNBO-compliant e-methane under EU sustainability standards.
  • The certification validates that ATLANTIS meets all EU criteria for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin, supporting industrial decarbonization and aiding offtakers in meeting EU climate laws.
  • Hy2gen plans to enhance the facility by installing additional PEM electrolysers by the end of 2025, aiming to meet the rising demand for renewable hydrogen and derivatives across Europe.
  • Through a Power Purchase Agreement with a German hydropower plant, Hy2gen will expand ATLANTIS's electrolysis capacity to supply certified fuels to European and international markets, advancing its global RFNBO production strategy.
Hy2gen Deutschland GmbH, the German subsidiary of the global renewable hydrogen producer Hy2gen, has achieved a significant milestone at its ATLANTIS facility in Werlte, Germany. The site has been certified by CertifHy as the first in Germany to produce RFNBO-compliant e-methane under the EU's sustainability framework for renewable fuels. This certification affirms ATLANTIS's adherence to EU criteria for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin, ensuring sustainability, traceability, and low lifecycle emissions. Matthias Lisson, Managing Director of Hy2gen Deutschland GmbH, expressed pride in this achievement, highlighting the role of e-methane in decarbonizing the maritime sector and its significance in complying with EU regulations. Hy2gen's acquisition of the ATLANTIS plant in 2023 has made renewable hydrogen production commercially viable, with plans to further upgrade the facility by integrating additional PEM electrolysers by the end of 2025. This strategic move aligns with the increasing demand for renewable hydrogen and its derivatives in Europe. Additionally, Hy2gen has secured a Power Purchase Agreement with a German hydropower plant to supply more renewable electricity to ATLANTIS, enabling the expansion of electrolysis capacity. This expansion will enhance the facility's ability to offer certified fuels to European and global markets, supporting the company's ambition to establish industrial-scale production of RFNBOs across its global projects. Overall, Hy2gen's RFNBO certification and expansion efforts at the ATLANTIS plant signify a positive step towards sustainable energy production and decarbonization, contributing to the energy transition in Germany and beyond.
