Ohmium International, a US developer of electrolyser systems for green hydrogen production, is expanding its manufacturing capacity in Karnataka, India. The company aims to double its capacity from 2 GW to 4 GW by 2026. The new gigafactory in Dodaballapura, near Bengaluru, specializes in Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers, crucial for green hydrogen production. These electrolysers facilitate the process of splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen using electricity from renewable sources, aiding in reducing carbon emissions across industries. CEO Arne Ballantine mentioned that the new factory will start at 10% capacity and scale up as project sizes grow to 100-200 MW. Ohmium plans to utilize India as a hub for its operations, leveraging partnerships with institutions like IIT Madras and focusing on mass production and easy assembly of PEM electrolysers. The company's emphasis on innovation is evident through collaborations with research entities like CSIR-Central Electrochemical Research Institute and IIT Madras Research Park. Ohmium's successful track record in India, including deals with NTPC, Tata Projects, and selection for the Ministry of Renewable Energy's SIGHT Incentives program, highlights its commitment to meeting the rising demand for green hydrogen. The new gigafactory represents a substantial investment in local infrastructure, equipment, and workforce, positioning Ohmium as a key player in the green hydrogen sector.
