Oman's Sur Industrial Hub Leading the Way in Green Hydrogen and Energy Transition
Key Ideas
  • The Sur Hydrogen Cluster and Energy Transition Study in Oman is progressing to the detailed feasibility stage, aiming to support decarbonisation in the Sur industrial hub.
  • The initiative involves integrating large-scale renewables and green hydrogen production to help industries in Sur achieve their Net Zero goals.
  • Oman LNG is collaborating with key partners like Oman India Fertiliser Company and OQ Gas Networks to shape the Sur Hydrogen and Energy Transition Cluster Study.
  • The project envisions producing around 487 tonnes per day of low-carbon hydrogen through renewable energy, displacing natural gas currently used by Sur-based industries.
The Sur Hydrogen Cluster and Energy Transition Study in Oman, spearheaded by Oman LNG, has progressed towards the detailed feasibility stage. The initiative aims to support the decarbonisation efforts of major industries in the Sur industrial hub. The focus is on integrating large-scale renewables and green hydrogen production to assist industrial, petrochemical, and energy projects in Sur in achieving their Net Zero goals. The Sustainable Energy Research Centre and the Oman Hydrogen Alliance have assessed the technical, economic, and partnership frameworks necessary to position Sur as a hydrogen export and low-carbon fuel hub in alignment with Oman's energy transition ambitions. Key partners in this initiative include Oman India Fertiliser Company, OQ Gas Networks, and others. The project envisions leveraging renewable energy to produce green hydrogen, displacing natural gas currently used by Sur-based industries. This shift could allow Oman LNG to redirect freed-up natural gas for liquefaction and export purposes. The project aims to produce approximately 487 tonnes per day of low-carbon hydrogen once fully implemented. Oman LNG is also exploring various initiatives to support energy transition and decarbonisation goals. These include developing power import projects, finalising green power sourcing concepts, and enhancing energy efficiency through different assessments. Moreover, the company is working on a new Energy Efficiency Improvement Programme to maintain high thermal efficiency at its triple-train complex in Qalhat. Overall, the project reflects Oman LNG's commitment to operational excellence, responsible energy use, and leadership in green hydrogen and energy transition.
