Spain's Cement Manufacturer Embraces Green Hydrogen Innovation
Key Ideas
  • A local cement manufacturer in Spain will use 'green' hydrogen in its production process with a 2MW Neptune II electrolyser from ITM Power.
  • The hydrogen will be co-fired with natural gas in the cement kiln, with the aim of reducing CO₂ emissions.
  • ITM Power's system deployment in the cement industry marks a significant step towards sustainable practices and reducing environmental impact.
A Spanish cement manufacturer is set to integrate 'green' hydrogen into its production process, a move that could revolutionize the industry's environmental impact. The company will utilize a 2MW Neptune II electrolyser from UK-based ITM Power for this purpose. The hydrogen produced by the electrolyser will be used in co-firing with natural gas in the cement kiln, a practice expected to significantly cut down CO₂ emissions associated with cement production. This groundbreaking initiative follows a successful trial conducted in 2021 by Hanson UK (now Heidelberg Materials) and MPA, which tested hydrogen co-firing in cement manufacturing. Notably, this deployment will mark the first instance of ITM Power's system being used in the cement sector, showcasing the increasing adoption of green hydrogen technology in traditionally carbon-intensive industries.
