Kristian Hammer, Product Manager AFI & Senior Consultant at DNV, revealed the latest data on alternative-fuelled vessel orders in April 2025. DNV's Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) platform reported 49 new orders during the month, indicating a positive trend in the industry. Methanol-fuelled vessels accounted for the majority of orders, with 24 new placements, showcasing a recovery post-winter. These orders were prominent in the container (14) and RoPax (9) segments, with one in the tanker segment, reflecting a growing variety of vessel types opting for methanol propulsion. LNG-fuelled vessels also experienced activity, with 20 new orders spread across container (16), cruise (2), and RoPax (2) segments. Additionally, two orders were made for LNG bunkering vessels, highlighting sustained interest in LNG infrastructure development. Noteworthy was the return of hydrogen in vessel orders, with two new orders from the cruise segment, marking the first hydrogen-fuelled vessel orders since June 2024. Overall, the data signifies a positive outlook for the adoption of alternative fuels in the marine industry, with diversification across methanol, LNG, and hydrogen.
