UHI North, West and Hebrides is making strides in the field of hydrogen training and innovation by fostering partnerships with international counterparts. During a recent visit to the Gewerbliche Schule in Backnang, Germany, Dr. Alasdair Macleod and Roddy Ferguson from Stornoway explored collaborative opportunities in hydrogen technologies. The visit included a tour of the HyLab | Hydrogen Learning Center Backnang's advanced facilities currently undergoing a €10 million upgrade to support hydrogen, construction, and automotive engineering. They also engaged with local industry partners focusing on high-temperature hydrogen fuel cell research, further solidifying the potential for international collaboration. UHI North, West and Hebrides offers a Professional Development Award in Hydrogen: An Introduction for Technicians, Scotland's sole SQA recognized qualification dedicated to hydrogen. Additionally, they lead the Creed Hydrogen Skills and Innovation Centre in Stornoway, with a mission to transform the Outer Hebrides into a global green hydrogen production hub, driving innovation in green hydrogen production learning, testing, and research. The positive outcomes of this visit are evident in the anticipation of joint projects and reciprocal visits, highlighting the promising future for hydrogen education and research collaborations between Scotland and Germany. The funding for the visit was part of the international outreach efforts by the Islands Centre for Net Zero (ICNZ), a collaborative initiative involving UHI North, West and Hebrides, Community Energy Scotland, and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, aimed at promoting sustainable economic growth and job creation across the Scottish islands.
