Uruguay's Strategic Approach to Sustainable Mobility Transition
Key Ideas
  • Uruguay is strategically evaluating technologies for sustainable mobility due to its limited economic scale.
  • Ancap, the state-owned firm, is exploring biofuels, natural gas, and green hydrogen for mobility solutions.
  • The country issued a decree focusing on eliminating greenhouse gas emissions in public transport by 2050.
  • A pilot program for green hydrogen-powered trucks is in early stages with funding being sought.
Uruguayan authorities are adopting a cautious approach to the country's mobility transition in light of its limited economic capacity. Cecilia San Ramón of Ancap highlighted the need to select the most viable technology for Uruguay's sustainable mobility future during a forum organized by daily El País. The exploration of electromobility, biofuels, and natural gas, particularly considering gas projects in neighboring Argentina, is part of this strategic evaluation. Ancap is also venturing into a pilot program for green hydrogen-powered trucks. The country's recent decree on sustainable transport sets ambitious targets, aiming to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions in public transport by 2050. Fiscal incentives and other measures are included in this framework. Despite these efforts, the scale of projects remains a challenge due to Uruguay's size. San Ramón emphasized the need for a phased approach. As Uruguay continues its sustainable mobility journey, it aims to leverage existing infrastructure and partnerships for a successful transition to cleaner transportation solutions.
