Air Liquide's ELYgator: Pioneering Low-Carbon Hydrogen Production in Rotterdam
Key Ideas
- Air Liquide's 200 MW electrolyzer project, ELYgator, in Maasvlakte, Rotterdam, reinforces low-carbon hydrogen production leadership in Europe.
- The project, supported by Dutch government subsidies and European funds, aims to produce 23,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually, reducing 300,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year.
- ELYgator, integrating Proton Exchange Membrane and Alkaline technologies, signifies a significant advancement in decarbonizing European industrial needs and heavy-duty mobility.
- The project, with a total investment of over 500 million euros, is set to be operational by the end of 2027, contributing to Europe's climate neutrality goals by 2050.
Air Liquide has made a significant move in European decarbonization efforts with the approval to commence the construction of ELYgator, a 200 MW electrolyzer project in Maasvlakte, Rotterdam. This initiative solidifies their position in low-carbon hydrogen production and marks a remarkable stride in addressing European industrial decarbonization needs. The project received crucial backing from the Dutch government, facilitated by the OWE subsidy scheme and European Innovation Fund, along with the Dutch IPCEI program. With an investment exceeding 500 million euros, Air Liquide plans to build, operate, and own the electrolyzer, supplying TotalEnergies' industrial platform through a long-term agreement. ELYgator is projected to generate 23,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually, catering to industrial and heavy-duty mobility consumers and cutting up to 300,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year. Noteworthy for integrating both Proton Exchange Membrane and Alkaline technologies on the same site, ELYgator is scheduled to commence operations by late 2027. Emilie Mouren-Renouard, a member of Air Liquide's Group Executive Committee overseeing European operations, emphasized the importance of this investment, highlighting its contribution to renewable hydrogen development and its potential to benefit European industries and heavy-duty transport sectors. She acknowledged the critical role of the Dutch Government in supporting this initiative. ELYgator is a tangible manifestation of Air Liquide's commitment to developing practical technologies and solutions that align with Europe's climate neutrality objectives by 2050. The project is part of the IPCEI Hydrogen and OWE subsidy programs under the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, in partnership with the Ministry of Climate Policy and Green Growth.
