The power transmission system operators from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden, collectively known as the Baltic Offshore Grid Initiative, have unveiled a collaborative roadmap to strengthen cross-border cooperation in offshore wind energy and electricity transmission infrastructure. This initiative follows the Vilnius Declaration signed in April 2024, which set ambitious offshore wind capacity targets for the Baltic Sea countries. The roadmap outlines strategic guidelines to achieve these targets, focusing on advancing offshore wind capacity to 93 GW by 2040, a substantial increase from the current 5 GW. The key elements of the roadmap include the development of new hybrid interconnector projects and offshore energy multi-purpose hubs to tap into the offshore power potential of the Baltic Sea. It identifies specific projects such as offshore hybrid projects, offshore power interconnection projects, onshore interconnection projects, and cross-border hydrogen projects. These projects are designed to support the offshore wind capacity targets set for 2030 and 2040. By emphasizing cross-border cooperation and infrastructure development, the Baltic Offshore Grid Initiative aims to create a more integrated and sustainable energy network in the region.
