Cross-Border Collaboration for a Hydrogen Pipeline: The H2Med Project
Key Ideas
  • French and Spanish operators, along with the EU, are investing in a 2.5 billion euro project to develop the H2Med hydrogen pipeline by 2030.
  • The pipeline will connect Portugal, Spain, France, and Germany, aiming to displace natural gas with CO2-free hydrogen.
  • Enagas, Natran, and Terega are partnering to operate the Barcelona-to-Marseille underwater pipeline, with Enagas holding the majority stake.
  • The European Union's approval to cover half of the project costs signifies a significant step towards the development of hydrogen infrastructure.
French gas grid operator Natran, in collaboration with storage operator Terega and Spain's Enagas, has initiated a joint venture to develop the Barmar hydrogen pipeline, a crucial component of the H2Med project. This cross-border pipeline will stretch from Barcelona to Marseille and form part of a larger initiative to link several European countries by 2030. The project, valued at 2.5 billion euros, aims to facilitate the transportation of 2 million metric tons of renewable hydrogen annually, contributing to the EU's goal of reducing carbon emissions. Enagas, Natran, and Terega are set to operate the pipeline, with Enagas holding a 50% stake and Natran and Terega holding 33.3% and 16.7% respectively. The EU's commitment to fund 50% of the project's development costs highlights the region's dedication to advancing hydrogen infrastructure. Despite a final investment decision not expected until 2028, the collaborative efforts of these operators signify a positive stride towards a greener energy future.
