A pilot project at the Port of Gothenburg is in its final phase, utilizing a hydrogen generator to provide electricity to ships docked at the port. This innovative approach aims to reduce emissions by enabling ships to use electricity instead of their conventional engines while docked. The project addresses the challenges faced by ports lacking the necessary infrastructure for shore power connections. The use of mobile hydrogen generators presents an alternative solution, exemplified by the current test at the Stena Line terminal. The initiative not only showcases the potential of hydrogen in reducing carbon dioxide emissions but also sets the stage for compliance with upcoming EU regulations mandating the use of On-shore Power Supply for vessels at berth by 2030. The collaboration between stakeholders such as Stena Line, Hitachi Energy, PowerCell Group, Linde Gas, and the Port of Gothenburg highlights the industry's commitment to exploring sustainable technologies and driving the energy transition. The project's success could lead to the widespread adoption of hydrogen technology in various port operations, as demonstrated by the diverse applications of hydrogen in the Port of Gothenburg beyond ship electrification.
