MOL's Wind Hunter Project Selected for NEDO Research Program in Japan
Key Ideas
  • MOL's Wind Hunter Project, focusing on offshore production of green hydrogen using wind power, has been chosen for Japan's NEDO research program.
  • The initiative involves optimizing hydrogen-producing vessels, studying wind patterns, building a demonstration vessel, and evaluating the hydrogen supply chain.
  • The project supports Japan's transition to a hydrogen-based society, with plans to commercialize a demonstration vessel by the 2030s.
  • MOL's test yacht Winz Maru made history in 2025 by successfully producing and supplying green hydrogen offshore, showcasing the project's feasibility.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has announced that its Wind Hunter Project, an initiative focused on utilizing wind power at sea to produce green hydrogen, has been selected by Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to participate in a national research program. The project, launched in November 2020, aims to leverage wind energy to create hydrogen offshore and then distribute it to onshore users, supporting Japan's shift towards a decarbonized, hydrogen-based society. As part of the NEDO program, MOL will not only enhance its hydrogen-producing vessels but also conduct investigations into wind patterns around Japan to pinpoint optimal conditions for generating green hydrogen at sea. Additionally, plans include constructing a demonstration vessel for the Wind Hunter Project and assessing the hydrogen supply chain for regional production and consumption. In a significant milestone, MOL's test yacht Winz Maru achieved a world first in March 2025 by successfully generating green hydrogen offshore and delivering it to shore. Looking forward, MOL envisions commercializing a demonstration vessel by the 2030s, contingent on the progression of Japan's hydrogen value chain. This initiative represents a positive step towards sustainable maritime practices and innovative solutions in the field of green energy.
