Oman's Green Hydrogen Auction: Pioneering the Future of Sustainable Energy
Key Ideas
- Oman launches its third green hydrogen auction round to solidify its position as a global green hydrogen production and export hub.
- Developers have the opportunity to invest in Oman's hydrogen ecosystem, with a focus on green hydrogen production, surplus renewable electricity sale, and integration into Oman's energy transition framework.
- Oman's strategic advantages include access to infrastructure, a stable regulatory framework, and proximity to key demand centers; the country aims for over 1 million tons per annum of green hydrogen production capacity by 2030.
- Eight large-scale green hydrogen projects have already been awarded, with over USD 49 billion in investments secured, marking Oman as one of the most advanced hydrogen ecosystems globally.
The Sultanate of Oman has initiated its third green hydrogen auction round, demonstrating its commitment to establishing itself as a key player in the green hydrogen sector. The auction, managed by Hydrom, aims to attract qualified developers to invest in Oman's hydrogen ecosystem, specifically focusing on green hydrogen production and export. The auction offers a land block in Duqm spanning up to 300 square kilometers, with flexibility for developers to propose projects covering a minimum of 100 square kilometers. This flexibility allows for tailored configurations aligning with individual development strategies and market demands. Bidders will benefit from an extended preparation period of nine months, enabling thorough project planning. In addition to green hydrogen production, developers can explore selling surplus renewable electricity to the national grid, enhancing project value and integration into Oman's energy transition plan. Oman's competitive advantages include access to common infrastructure, a stable regulatory environment, and strategic proximity to key markets in Europe and Asia. The country is also developing a 2,000-kilometer hydrogen pipeline and a liquid hydrogen export corridor to Europe via the Netherlands and Germany. With eight green hydrogen projects already awarded and over USD 49 billion in investments targeting a production capacity exceeding 1 million tons per annum by 2030, Oman is emerging as a leading global hydrogen ecosystem. The RFQ process has commenced, with proposals expected in early 2026 and subsequent awards. Developers interested in participating can find more information on www.hydrom.om.
