Port of Antwerp-Bruges Aims to Become Europe's Hydrogen Hub by 2030
Key Ideas
  • The Port of Antwerp-Bruges plans to import one million tonnes of hydrogen yearly by 2030 to supply industrial clusters in Belgium, Germany, and Europe.
  • Investments are being made in a carbon transport network and facilities for importing low-carbon hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and biofuels.
  • The port is a member of the H2Global Foundation and is involved in auctioning green hydrogen through its subsidiary to promote competitive pricing.
  • A joint venture including Fluxys Belgium, Pipelink, and Air Liquide is constructing a CO2 pipeline network in the Antwerp port area backed by European Commission funding.
The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is strategically positioning itself to become a prominent hub for hydrogen imports and carbon dioxide exports by 2030. The port aims to import one million tonnes of hydrogen annually, not only to cater to Belgium's needs but also to serve as an energy source for industrial clusters in Germany and across Europe. To support this ambitious goal, the port is investing in a large-scale carbon transport network and developing facilities for importing low-carbon hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and biofuels. Additionally, the port is actively contributing to the European Clean Industrial Deal, with a focus on creating a competitive and climate-neutral industry. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has also joined the H2Global Foundation, where its subsidiary, HINT.CO, facilitates the auctioning of green hydrogen and its derivatives at competitive prices. This initiative aims to promote the widespread adoption of green hydrogen in industrial processes. Flemish minister Jo Brouns emphasized the importance of sustainable hydrogen for the industry and heavy transport, acknowledging the necessity of import due to the limited local production capacity. Furthermore, a collaborative effort involving Fluxys Belgium, Pipelink, and Air Liquide is underway to establish the Fluxys c-grid Antwerp, a CO2 pipeline network in the port area. The construction of this network, which will connect industrial players to permanent underground storage, has commenced and is expected to be finalized by the end of 2026, with financial support from the European Commission. These developments showcase the Port of Antwerp-Bruges' commitment to sustainability, innovation, and fostering partnerships to drive the transition towards a carbon-neutral industrial sector.
