Africa's largest money manager, Public Investment Corp. (PIC), has partnered with the Industrial Development Corporation and the Development Bank of Southern Africa to finance green hydrogen projects in South Africa. The aim is to produce energy without carbon pollution by supporting early-stage green hydrogen and green ammonia projects through a $37 million investment in the SA-H2 fund. The first project under this initiative, the Hive Coega green ammonia plant in the Eastern Cape, is set to create 1 million tons of clean fuel annually, generate over 20,000 jobs, and attract investment in the country's renewable sector. This move aligns with a broader global shift towards sustainable practices, where big players like Google and IKEA are also making climate-friendly investments. The project not only promises economic benefits and job creation but also contributes to reducing pollution in challenging industries like shipping and fertilizer. With support from international partners like Climate Fund Managers and Invest International, South Africa is poised to become a leader in clean fuel production and a beacon of successful public-private collaboration for climate action.
