Enagás has officially launched the Public Participation Plan for Spain’s hydrogen backbone network, a groundbreaking initiative that aims to drive decarbonization and bolster Spain’s position in Europe's hydrogen economy. The plan, unveiled at the National Hydrogen Centre in Puertollano, Castilla-La Mancha, signifies a significant milestone in constructing a massive 2,600-kilometer network of hydrogen pipelines spanning 13 autonomous communities and over 550 municipalities. This innovative hydrogen backbone, leveraging existing natural gas infrastructure, is strategically designed to interconnect industrial hubs and provide vital support to sectors facing challenges in electrification. Recognized as a Project of Common Interest by the European Union, the initiative has secured more than €75 million in funding through the Connecting Europe Facility. Additionally, Enagás is actively progressing engineering studies and blueprints for compression stations and valve points along the network to guarantee safe and effective operations. Once operational, Spain’s hydrogen backbone will consist of five primary corridors, such as the Vía de la Plata and the Ebro Valley, and will be linked to the H2Med corridor to establish connections with France and Portugal, solidifying Spain’s pivotal role in the burgeoning European hydrogen landscape.
