The UK government has approved the start of construction on 10 commercial-scale green hydrogen projects under the first phase of the Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR1). These projects are set to decarbonize heavy industry while generating skilled jobs in areas like South Wales, Bradford, North Scotland, and Teesside. By producing hydrogen domestically through electrolysers, the initiatives target reducing fossil fuel reliance in sectors such as steel, glass manufacturing, and heavy transport. Notable projects include the HyMarnham scheme in Newark and the Cromarty Hydrogen Project in Northeast Scotland. The collective projects are anticipated to create over 700 jobs and attract more than £400 million in private investment between 2024 and 2026, contributing to the UK's ambition of becoming a clean energy leader.
