The UK's Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) has allocated £96 million to support the expansion of the East Coast Hydrogen pipeline network, covering regions like the North East, Yorkshire, Humber, and East Midlands. The funding, announced on June 20, 2025, will aid in engineering, planning, and public consultation to advance Britain's hydrogen infrastructure programs. The initiative, involving National Gas, Northern Gas Networks, and Cadent, aims to link industrial hydrogen consumers to primary hydrogen production and storage, utilizing repurposed natural gas pipelines and new constructions. Jon Butterworth, CEO of National Gas, highlighted the importance of this investment in scaling up the UK's hydrogen economy and transitioning to a low-carbon energy system. Similarly, Steve Fraser, CEO of Cadent, and Mark Horsley, CEO of Northern Gas Networks, emphasized the project's significance in driving job creation, regional economic growth, and supporting decarbonization efforts. The East Coast Hydrogen project, part of the larger Project Union, is set to deliver the first phase of the UK's core hydrogen network in the next decade, with gas flows projected to start in the early 2030s. The funding from Ofgem complements recent government support for green hydrogen, underlining the commitment to a sustainable energy transition.
