The UK has given the green light for ten commercial-scale green hydrogen projects, marking the beginning of the country's hydrogen strategy. The Hydrogen Allocation Round 1 (HAR1) projects cover a wide geographical area in the UK and aim to produce hydrogen for industries such as mining, aviation, and transportation. These projects are projected to generate more than 700 job opportunities across construction and operational phases, catering to roles for apprentices, graduates, and engineers. Financially, the projects will benefit from £2bn in support over 15 years from the Hydrogen Production Business Model, along with an additional £90m from the Net Zero Hydrogen Fund and £400m in private investments. The CEO of Hydrogen UK, Clare Jackson, highlighted the significance of signing these contracts as a testament to the confidence and dedication of both the government and industry in fostering a sustainable hydrogen sector. Regional projects like the Langage green hydrogen project in Plymouth and the Tees Green hydrogen project in Redcar showcase innovative approaches to hydrogen production, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions and support sustainable aviation fuel production. With timelines set for the projects to go online between 2025 and April 2028, the government is actively supporting the growth of the hydrogen sector, with 27 projects shortlisted for the next phase (HAR2) set to be announced in the coming year.
