AFC Energy PLC has announced a joint venture with Industrial Chemicals Group Ltd in Cranleigh, England, to produce hydrogen from ammonia using proprietary technology. The aim of the venture is to provide hydrogen at a disruptive market price without relying on UK government subsidies, with the first revenues expected in early 2026. The initial production target is up to 400 kilograms of hydrogen per day, with plans for expansion through the sale of portable Hy-5 ammonia cracker units capable of generating up to 500 kilograms per day. The JV will leverage AFC Energy's cracking technology and ICL's ammonia expertise to establish a lower-cost, low-carbon hydrogen supply chain. It is set to acquire AFC's pilot ammonia cracking plant and hydrogen compression system later this year. CEO John Wilson highlighted the JV's strategic position to benefit from the ease of storing ammonia compared to the high capital costs of storing hydrogen, especially with the expected availability of green ammonia imports in the UK from 2027. AFC Energy shares saw a 7.1% increase following the announcement. This partnership signifies a significant step towards innovative and sustainable hydrogen production in the UK market, shaping the future of clean energy solutions.
