Serbia Prepares to Integrate Hydrogen into Gas Infrastructure
Key Ideas
  • Serbia's gas operator is exploring the technical feasibility of transporting hydrogen through the gas network to align with decarbonization and energy security goals.
  • The study will assess blending hydrogen with natural gas, determine suitable production and storage sites, and identify impact on key consumers.
  • New gas pipelines in Europe, including those in Serbia, are capable of transporting 100% pure hydrogen, allowing for potential integration.
  • The study will also focus on regulatory changes needed for introducing hydrogen into the gas infrastructure, aiming to enhance energy diversity and sustainability.
Serbia's natural gas transmission system operator, Transportgas Srbija, has initiated a study to evaluate the technical feasibility of transporting hydrogen through the existing gas network. This move is driven by the increasing importance of hydrogen as an alternative fuel in the context of decarbonization and energy security. The study aims to determine the quantities of hydrogen that can be transported, assess blending hydrogen with natural gas, and identify suitable production and storage sites in Serbia. It will also analyze the impact on key consumers such as steelworks, asphalt plants, and cogeneration plants. The study will explore the maximum percentage of hydrogen that can be blended with natural gas, define blending procedures, and recommend infrastructure upgrades. Additionally, the assessment will include determining the impact on equipment, transmission system losses, and necessary investments for integrating hydrogen. The consultant will be tasked with proposing regulatory changes to facilitate the introduction of hydrogen into Serbia's gas infrastructure. The study deadline for bids is July 23, with the consultant expected to complete the work within 180 days, aiming to pave the way for a more sustainable and diversified energy future in Serbia.
