CPS Energy, a Texas-based utility firm, has announced a new partnership with energy company Modern Hydrogen to explore the potential for cleaner power generation from natural gas. The collaboration aims to increase electricity grid resiliency and reduce carbon emissions by converting natural gas into clean hydrogen. Rather than burning natural gas and emitting carbon dioxide, Modern Hydrogen employs a process that breaks down hydrocarbons in natural gas to produce hydrogen and solid carbon. The solid carbon produced is captured and reused in products like asphalt for infrastructure projects, offering a sustainable solution for carbon capture and utilization. CPS Energy, which serves over 950,000 electric and 389,000 natural gas customers in San Antonio and surrounding areas, sees this project as a significant step towards decarbonization and promoting cleaner energy practices.
