Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Guidance Tamil Nadu is set to establish the Hyundai HTWO Innovation Centre, a dedicated research and development facility focusing on green hydrogen. The centre, with an estimated project cost of ₹180 crore, will receive a ₹100 crore investment from HMIL and the Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF). Planned to be operational by 2026, the 65,000 square feet facility at IIT Madras' Discovery Satellite Campus in Chennai will house advanced laboratories for computational and experimental research, supporting pilot-scale evaluations of electrolyzers and fuel cells. It aims to showcase industrial hydrogen applications through containerized demonstrators. The initiative, highlighted by Minister T.R.B. Rajaa and HMIL Managing Director Unsoo Kim, aims to bolster India's hydrogen ecosystem through collaborations and local innovations. IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti emphasized the centre's role in contributing to national decarbonization efforts and supporting India's clean energy goals, aligning with the country's net-zero target for 2070. The project was praised for its potential to develop a skilled hydrogen workforce and enhance global-local collaborations towards achieving clean energy objectives.
