China is making strides in clean energy shipping with the launch of its first inland hydrogen fuel cell-powered container ship. Developed by Zhejiang Hydrogen Energy Industry Development Co., Ltd., the vessel is equipped with Sinosynergy's 240 kW hydrogen fuel cells, setting a new standard for green shipping in China. Operating along the Zhapu–Xiasha corridor in Zhejiang Province, the ship can carry up to 64 TEUs, store 600 kg of hydrogen, and travel 380 km on a full tank. It features a digital twin monitoring system for real-time performance tracking, enhancing efficiency and sustainability. The service tender, managed by Jiaxing Zhongcheng, is valued at 680,000 yuan and is set to begin on July 7, 2025. The environmentally friendly ship is expected to reduce up to 700 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, contributing significantly to industrial decarbonization efforts. Beyond its immediate impact, this project aims to lay the foundation for a broader hydrogen infrastructure network in China's inland waterways, aligning with the country's vision of integrating sustainable energy solutions with logistics. With hydrogen fuel cells at its core, this initiative demonstrates China's commitment to advancing zero-emission technologies in the transportation sector. By spearheading innovative projects like the hydrogen-powered container ship, China is showcasing the practical application of clean energy solutions in the shipping industry, emphasizing the immediate benefits of adopting hydrogen for sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation.
