Air New Zealand has established a reputation for its proactive stance on sustainability within the airline industry. The airline, once part of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), recently recalibrated its emissions goals, aiming for a 20-25% reduction by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. However, challenges in accessing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) led to the adjustment of its targets. Despite this, Air New Zealand remains committed to achieving net zero goals by 2050. The airline, based in a country that values environmental conservation, has taken initiatives to lead in sustainability even without specific country fuel mandates. Air New Zealand's Chief Sustainability Officer mentioned the importance of sourcing SAF from locations like Singapore and California as there is no local production. Additionally, the airline has partnered with LanzaJet to explore producing SAF in New Zealand from forestry waste. Noteworthy is Air New Zealand's 'Mission Next Gen Aircraft' project, focusing on electric and hybrid-electric aircraft testing. This initiative aims to potentially replace current turboprops with more sustainable alternatives, considering the airline's short domestic flight distances and renewable energy availability. Although facing challenges with partners in the clean aviation market, such as Universal Hydrogen and Eviation, Air New Zealand remains optimistic about the future. The airline has selected BETA Technologies for flight testing, showcasing a firm commitment to embracing cleaner aviation technologies.
