AMSL Aero, a Bankstown-based eVTOL manufacturer, is preparing to conduct hydrogen-electric flight testing of its Vertiia prototype within a year. The company recently completed 12 months of successful ground testing of a 100-kW fuel cell test bench, utilizing over 200 kg of hydrogen. This achievement positions the Vertiia for hydrogen-powered flights by mid-2026. AMSL's chairman, Chris Smallhorn, emphasized the viability of hydrogen-electric powertrains for eVTOLs to revolutionize air travel by offering longer-distance flights with reduced costs and carbon footprints. The collaboration between AMSL Aero and Bankstown Airport has made it possible for the airport to become the first in Australia to introduce hydrogen as aviation fuel, marking a significant milestone in eco-friendly air transportation. The Vertiia, a hybrid-electric aircraft, is anticipated to have a 540 nm range on hydrogen, catering to applications in medevac, freight, and passenger transport. Moreover, AMSL deployed the hydrogen powertrain test bench to Wellington Airport in regional NSW for recharging the Vertiia between test flights, showcasing the company's commitment to innovative and sustainable aviation solutions.
