During a panel at Routes Europe 2025 in Seville, executives from European airlines and a major airport operator expressed optimism about the aviation industry's ability to achieve net zero carbon goals by 2050. They emphasized the critical role that sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and regulatory actions in the upcoming five years will play in reaching these targets. EasyJet's Director General highlighted the importance of SAF in the short, medium, and long term, mentioning the collaboration with Airbus on developing a hydrogen-powered, zero-emissions aircraft. Aena's head of environmental sustainability also stressed the urgency of making significant strides in aviation sustainability within the next five years. TUI's director underlined the need for ambitious targets, political support, and honesty in evaluating the availability of SAF. The executives acknowledged the challenges in maintaining air travel affordability and ensuring a level competitive playing field as sustainability rules are implemented. They called for increased political courage to scale up SAF production and address regulatory barriers to achieve energy self-sufficiency in Europe.
