India's Green Fuel Collaboration with Port of Rotterdam: A Step Towards Sustainable Energy Supply
Key Ideas
  • AM Green and the Port of Rotterdam signed an MoU to establish a green fuels supply chain, aiming to export up to 1 MTPA of hydrogen-based fuels from India to Northwestern Europe.
  • The collaboration includes the development of bunkering fuels, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs), terminal infrastructure, and green port development to connect India’s Net Zero Industrial Clusters to Europe via Rotterdam.
  • The partnership aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and Europe’s decarbonization goals, targeting significant green hydrogen and green ammonia production capacities by 2030 to contribute to global industrial decarbonization.
  • The agreement highlights the creation of a global carbon-free energy ecosystem, emphasizing the seamless movement of green molecules and fuels between India and Europe, with the Port of Rotterdam supporting port infrastructure for hydrogen-based fuels storage and distribution.
AM Green and the Port of Rotterdam Authority have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a green fuels supply chain between India and Northwestern Europe. The agreement aims to enable exports of up to 1 million tonnes per annum of hydrogen-based fuels, with a potential trade value of $1 billion annually. The collaboration includes the development of bunkering fuels, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs), terminal infrastructure, and green port development to connect India’s Net Zero Industrial Clusters to Europe via Rotterdam. The Port of Rotterdam, which handles 13% of Europe’s total energy demand, will play a crucial role in supporting the supply chain. AM Green targets a production capacity of 5 MTPA of green ammonia by 2030, equivalent to 1 MTPA of green hydrogen. The partnership is in line with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and Europe’s decarbonization goals. The Port of Rotterdam will assist in developing port infrastructure for safe storage and distribution of hydrogen-based fuels. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s Green Hydrogen Mission aims for 5 MTPA of green hydrogen production by 2030, with AM Green’s proposed output contributing significantly to both India’s and Europe’s green hydrogen targets.
