ZeroAvia has announced a partnership with Loganair to explore the adoption of hydrogen-electric engines for zero-emission flights in the UK. ZeroAvia is working on certifying a 600kW hydrogen-electric powertrain for 10-20 seat aircraft, aiming to use the Cessna Caravan as the launch airframe and later targeting other aircraft models, including the Twin Otter. Additionally, ZeroAvia is developing the ZA2000 engine for 40-80 seat aircraft like the ATR family, a range that aligns with Loganair's current fleet. The hydrogen-electric engines operate by generating electricity through hydrogen fuel cells, producing only water as a byproduct, thus offering a near-zero in-flight emissions impact. Apart from environmental benefits, these engines promise cost reductions for airlines due to lower maintenance requirements and the expected cost-effectiveness of hydrogen fuel. This collaboration solidifies ZeroAvia's ties in Scotland, with plans to establish a hydrogen fuel cell manufacturing center near Glasgow Airport.
