The SASHA Coalition, in collaboration with six other NGOs and industry alliances, representing 82 clean maritime and green hydrogen industry stakeholders, have penned a letter to the European Commission and EU Presidency. The letter criticizes the recent International Maritime Organization (IMO) agreement, stating it fails to adequately promote green hydrogen and e-fuels in the shipping industry. To address the shortcomings of the IMO measures, the letter advocates for the EU to enhance clean shipping policy by introducing financial support mechanisms, expanding the maritime Emissions Trading System (ETS), setting stronger e-fuel uptake targets, and advocating for ambitious regulation at the IMO to encourage the adoption of green hydrogen fuels. Aurelia Leeuw, Director of EU Policy at the SASHA Coalition, stresses the necessity for EU support to enable the shipping industry to transition to green hydrogen fuels, emphasizing the potential of these fuels for industrial competitiveness and meeting Europe's climate goals. Madadh MacLaine, Secretary General of ZESTAs, echoes the sentiment, highlighting the importance of robust regulation and science-based analysis to foster the growth of the green maritime sector. The letter's signatories, including prominent organizations like SASHA Coalition, ZESTAs, NABU, Carbon Market Watch, and others, call for a comprehensive approach to clean shipping regulation to ensure environmental sustainability, industry innovation, and climate resilience. By urging the EU to strengthen its support for green hydrogen fuels and e-fuels, the signatories emphasize the critical role of policy measures in advancing the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable maritime industry.
