The European Commission has recently announced a substantial grant of €992 million to fund 15 renewable hydrogen projects, with a strong focus on maritime applications in Norway. A significant portion of nearly €100 million has been earmarked for three maritime-focused projects aimed at hydrogen bunkering. The projects, RjukanH2, Gen2-LH2, and Hammerfest H2, will receive subsidies ranging from €0.45 to €1.88 per kg. Despite the early stage of hydrogen adoption in the shipping industry, the potential of hydrogen-derived e-fuels to support decarbonisation efforts is recognized. The selected initiatives will be required to finalize their grant agreements with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency within the next few years, with production slated to begin within five years. These projects will also benefit from fixed premium subsidies for up to a decade, emphasizing a sustained commitment to renewable hydrogen production and environmental sustainability.
