Harwich’s Freeport East has received a significant investment of £1.44 million to support its Hydrogen Zero Emission Maritime (HyZEM) project, which aims to develop low-carbon green hydrogen technology for high-powered workboats. An additional sum of funding has been provided by Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. The partnership, led by Freeport East, involves UK and Australian companies specializing in green hydrogen storage and propulsion technologies. The consortium includes Steamology, the National Composites Centre, Duodrive, Chartwell Marine, and the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult. Steamology is leading the project, focusing on delivering scalable and modular solutions for industrial steam heat and power, embracing hydrogen and circular economies to eliminate emissions and replace fossil fuels. The collaboration aims to showcase the world’s first zero-emission hydrogen steam turbine marine propulsion. ORE Catapult's project engineer highlighted the importance of innovative technologies like hydrogen storage and hydrogen-fueled turbines in decarbonizing the marine fleet. Freeport East, recognized as one of the UK's trade growth zones, is committed to supporting green technology solutions and aiding UK businesses in expanding globally. This recent funding success marks the third consortium achievement for Freeport East in the past year, reflecting the rapid growth and innovation-driven environment within the Freeport.
