French Companies Collaborate on Low-Carbon Hydrogen Vessel Innovation
Key Ideas
  • Two French companies, Louis Dreyfus Armateurs and Technip, sign an MoU to develop the ammonia cracking component of LDA's FRESH solution for low-carbon ammonia and hydrogen.
  • The 170-meter-long FRESH vessel is equipped with 45,000 cubic meters of storage capacity for ammonia, which can be converted into hydrogen through a cracking plant on board.
  • Technip Energies will provide its energy-efficient ammonia cracking technology for the project, emphasizing reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly hydrogen production.
  • The partnership aims to establish a floating low-carbon hydrogen terminal to supply industries and heavy mobility with gaseous hydrogen, ensuring very low greenhouse gas and NOx emissions.
Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) and Technip, two prominent French companies in the shipping and energy sectors, have joined forces to develop an innovative solution for producing low-carbon hydrogen. The collaboration involves the creation of the FRESH vessel, a ship-based processing and storage facility designed to handle low-carbon ammonia and hydrogen. The vessel, measuring 170 meters in length, boasts impressive storage capacity for imported ammonia, which can be transformed into hydrogen through an integrated cracking plant on its deck. This conversion process, led by Technip Energies' highly energy-efficient technology, ensures the production of gaseous hydrogen at a rate of 50,000 tonnes per year with exceptional purity levels and energy efficiency. The generated hydrogen is then compressed and transferred ashore to cater to various industries and heavy transport needs. One key feature of the FRESH solution is its flexibility; the vessel can be easily relocated based on the fluctuating demand for hydrogen. Mathieu Muzeau, the managing director of transport & logistics at LDA, views the partnership with Technip Energies as a significant achievement in establishing a mobile low-carbon hydrogen terminal. By incorporating Technip Energies' cutting-edge ammonia cracking technology, the collaboration aims to create a reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly solution, prioritizing minimal greenhouse gas and NOx emissions in the hydrogen production process.
