Australia has marked a significant milestone in its push towards clean energy with the opening of the country's first public hydrogen refuelling station for heavy vehicles in Geelong, Victoria. The station is part of an Energy Hub that promotes the adoption of cleaner fuels in transportation. It allows hydrogen-powered trucks, buses, and rubbish trucks to refuel using a fast-fill system that can service up to 10 trucks in under two hours. Notably, the hydrogen production at the station is powered by a 2.5-megawatt electrolyser that utilizes recycled water to create renewable hydrogen, making it a sustainable fuel choice. This initiative has garnered praise from Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles and Victorian Minister for Climate Action Lily D’Ambrosio, who view it as a critical step in lowering transport emissions in the country. The project also offers fast charging for electric vehicles alongside traditional diesel options, providing fleet operators with multiple low-emission choices. Supported by major transport operators like Toll Group and Cleanaway, the initiative has received financial backing from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the Victorian Government. This support has enabled the station to produce up to 1,000 kilograms of renewable hydrogen daily, catering to the needs of vehicles in the Geelong area and beyond. The project emphasizes collaboration between industry and government to drive the transition towards sustainable transport. Viva Energy's Chief Strategy Officer, Lachlan Pfeiffer, highlighted the importance of hydrogen as an alternative fuel in reducing emissions and fostering a sustainable transport sector in Australia.
