Klaipeda Port in Lithuania is on a mission to lead the green hydrogen revolution in the Baltic region. The port, under the leadership of Algis Latakas, plans to produce and supply green hydrogen for various purposes, aiming to fulfill Lithuania's and the EU's environmental commitments. The project includes the development of a specialized site with new engineering networks and the installation of a hydrogen plant in a sea container. The port is expected to start producing green hydrogen by 2026, with plans to power vessels, vehicles, trucks, and buses with this sustainable fuel. Partnerships have been crucial to the project's success, with agreements signed with companies like Bega and LTG Group to explore the use of green hydrogen in different sectors such as port equipment and railway transport. The port also aims to launch Lithuania's first public hydrogen refuelling station by 2026, primarily catering to port needs. The green hydrogen produced will be utilized for powering a waste-collecting ship operating in the port, showcasing the port's commitment to sustainability. Funded by the EU's NextGenerationEU program, the project has a total value of around €12 million, with significant support from the EU amounting to €5.7 million. By venturing into uncharted territory and embracing green energy, Klaipeda Port is taking bold steps towards a more sustainable future and setting an example for the region.
