Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg announced this initiative as part of the broader Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (SHER), focusing on transparency and credibility in hydrogen development. By investing in technology and innovation, Sarawak aims to become a cost-competitive and reliable hydrogen producer, positioning itself as a leader in the clean energy sector. The Premier highlighted the importance of governance, infrastructure, financing, and regulatory clarity to support Sarawak's hydrogen vision during the World Hydrogen Asia 2025 Conference in Tokyo. He emphasized the state's efforts in securing international purchase agreements and showcased ongoing projects like H2biscus, H2ornbill, and the Rembus Hydrogen Plant, which will supply green hydrogen to power urban transportation systems with zero carbon emissions. Furthermore, the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) systems signifies Sarawak's commitment to modernizing urban mobility sustainably. The integration of hydrogen into the state's regulatory framework through amendments to the Sarawak Gas Distribution Ordinance demonstrates a proactive approach towards fostering a hydrogen-powered future.
